Among the oldest spirits of the Elderwilds, none are spoken of with greater reverence than Varyth, the Ember Fox — the wandering guardian whose burning form drifts silently between the trees like living firelight.
The shamans of the Old Ways believed Varyth was born during the first winter. When dying travelers prayed for warmth beneath the Hollowwind Mountains. Fearing the cold winds and dark that followed, it it said that near its finality, the final ember within their campfire did not fade with the snow, but instead sparked a roaring fire anew. Gathering spirit and memory unto itself and rising from the ashes in the shape of a great fox wreathed in flame.
Since then, Varyth has roamed the forgotten paths of the wilds.
To the lost, this spirit appears as a distant orange glow weaving through the fog. Guiding weary souls away from the drowning marshes, starving beasts, and places where the veil between worlds has grown thin. Many who survived the Elderwilds claimed they were led home by a fox whose fur burned without smoke and whose paws left glowing prints amung the pine covered earth.
