Banner of Varuun Earthshaker, Keeper of the Horde
Lore

“May our horns stand as firm as Varuun’s. May our hearts remain as steadfast. May we keep the Horde, as faithfully as he once kept us.”
Few relics are held in greater reverence among the Horned Horde than the battle standard of Varuun Earthshaker, Keeper of the Horde.
Long before the clans stood as one, the horned tribes of the beastfolk living among the Elderwilds were divided. Ancient rivalries over hunting grounds, sacred groves, and forgotten paths kept them locked in near endless conflict. Every season claiming more lives than the last, and many believed the horned tribes would one day wipe themselves out.
Then came Varuun

Towering above most of his kin, he bore great sweeping horns that arched proudly towards the heavens, a frame built for war, yet a heart devoted to his people.
Though unmatched upon the battlefield, those closest to him remembered something far greater than strength. They remembered the warmth of his laughter echoing throughout the great halls after a hunt. He was a gentle giant who knelt to embrace his children and cherished his mate above any treasure in the land. They remembered one who believed a chieftain’s first duty was not to rule his people, but to protect them.

Varuun did not unite the clans through fear. He united them through trust. Through courage, wisdom, and unwavering resolve, he forged the scattered tribes into one Horde. Under one banner, old grudges were laid to rest, and the horned folk who had once drawn blades against one another now stood shoulder to shoulder as one.
For many seasons, there was peace. The Horned tribes grew in harmony, and the old rivalries slowly faded into memory. However, the peace of the Horde could not silence the bloodshed beyond its borders. When whispers of a great war finally reached the Horde, Varuun was the first to answer its call.

As war chieftain, he refused the safety of the rear ranks, choosing instead to bear the first charge himself. Carrying the banner he had forged for his people high, he believed that no warrior should be asked to walk a path their leader feared to tread. It was said that wherever Varuun’s banner still flew, hope endured, and no horned warrior yielded a single inch of ground. Then came the battle that would forever shape the Horde.

For four days and nights, the Horde held against an overwhelming enemy. At dawn on the fifth day, the lines finally broke, and the invaders surged toward the valley where the children, elders, and families had taken refuge.
Among them were Varuun’s own…
Without hesitation, the Earthshaker gathered all who were willing to make one final stand.
His great hammer rose and fell like thunder. The earth trembled beneath his charge as his mighty horns shattered shields and scattered foes. Though every step carried him farther from his family and closer to his end, never once did he look back.

With every step, he carried the burden so that his children, and the children of the Horde, never would.
He did not fight for glory. He fought so that the Horde might see another sunrise. So that his beloved mate would never know the weight of the invader’s chains. So that every child of the Horde could inherit a brighter tomorrow won by his courage.
One by one, his warriors fell beside him until only Varuun remained.
Still he stood.

Only when the last of the Horde had escaped beyond the valley did the Keeper of the Horde yield his final breath.
His body never returned home. Only his banner made it back to his tribe and family.
Weathered by rain, darkened by smoke, and stained by the blood of that final charge, the banner was raised within the great hall of the Horde. Not as a display, nor a symbol of conquest, but as a reminder that the greatest leaders are remembered not for blood, but for the life they were willing to lay down to protect others.

Now, before every great hunt, every council, and every march to war, the horned tribes, now united, gather beneath Varuun’s banner. Each places a hand upon its worn cloth to speak an ancient oath:
“Stand as one. Protect the Horde. Let no fear outweigh your love.”
Though Varuun fell, his banner never did.
