Within the Gloamwood, the hanging bottles are older than the trails themselves.
Travelers often mistake them for charms filled with herbs, oils, or swamp remedies crafted by forgotten marshfolk. And some truly were made for such purposes — tinctures against fever, rot, venom, and the countless sicknesses born from blackwater and mist.
But the oldest bottles were never meant to heal the body.
They were made to carry prayers.
In the ancient days, the people of the Elderwilds believed spoken words vanished too easily within the swamp. The Gloamwood consumed sound, memory, and even grief beneath its endless fog. So shamans and wanderers began sealing their hopes, fears, and promises inside glass vessels bound with bone, twine, anc worked with the branches of the more itself. Believing the forest spirits would hear what the living no longer could.
A prayer for safe passage.
A plea for warmth during the long rains.
An offering to calm the restless dead beneath the water.
A final goodbye to those swallowed by the marsh. Each bottle became a small sacred reliquary — suspended from moss-draped branches where wind and rain could slowly carry the prayer into the wilderness itself.
Over time, however, darker rituals emerged.
Some bottles were used not to release prayers, but to contain things never meant to wander free. Strange whispers. Curses. Fragments of memory. Spirits drawn from the blackwater depths. These were marked with bone bindings and sealed in ash wax before being hung far from mortal dwellings.
Even now, the Bonebound Bottles sway gently within the swamp, creaking softly in the fog.
