Among the oldest lessons preserved within the Hollow Tree is the tale of the Sleeping Fox.

Long ago, a fox laid itself beneath the roots of an ancient tree at the end of a long life. The seasons passed as they always had. Rain softened the earth. Moss embraced the old bones. Time quietly claimed what life had left behind.

Then, one spring morning, the first shoots appeared.

The elders would tell their children that the forest had accepted the fox's final gift.

Not its body.

Its life.

They believed every living thing carried a quiet spark that did not simply vanish when its journey ended. Instead, it returned to the Elderwilds, where it nourished the roots, fed the moss, and awakened new life in places where none had grown before.

The young fern rising from the fox's back became a symbol carried throughout the Hollow Tree—not of death, but of becoming. A reminder that endings are never empty, and that every life leaves the world more capable of blooming than it found it.

The fae would often leave this illustration where grief had settled, not to mourn what had been lost, but to remind those who remained that the forest never wastes a life freely given.

For in the Elderwilds, nothing is truly gone.

It simply learns another way to grow.
