Verdant Warden
Lore

"The oldest guardians are seldom the swiftest. They simply outlive everything that dares threaten the forest."

Before shrines were raised, before the Hollowwind found its voice, and before the Veiled Reliquary gave names to forgotten things, there walked a single great boar.
The forest remembers him as the Verdant Warden.

Neither beast nor god, he is said to awaken wherever the balance of the Elderwilds is threatened. His hide is not fur, but a mantle of ancient moss and pale lichen, grown so thick that saplings have been known to take root upon his back. Time has worn his great tusks smooth—not merely through battle, but through countless ages spent turning the earth, lifting fallen trees, and opening forgotten paths beneath the canopy.

He is not the ruler of the Elderwilds.
He is its keeper.
Where the Verdant Warden treads, broken earth softens beneath fresh moss, forgotten springs rise once more, and new life takes root where death had long lingered. Entire groves are said to have blossomed where he rested for but a single night.

To behold him is considered both a blessing...
And a warning.

For the Warden seldom reveals himself unless something has forgotten its place.
Hunters who kill without need.
Travelers who scar living trees for sport.

Those who take from the forest while offering nothing in return.

The old tales say they first hear the slow scrape of ancient tusks against bark. Then the forest begins to change. Trails disappear beneath creeping roots. Familiar landmarks vanish beneath fresh growth. Every path leads deeper into the woods until the Elderwilds itself decides whether they may leave.

Few who have looked upon the Verdant Warden speak of fear. Instead, they describe an overwhelming stillness—as though every leaf, every bird, and every breath of wind had paused in reverence for the oldest soul still walking beneath the canopy.

The Veiled Reliquary teaches that every forest survives because something older still chooses to defend it.
Among the oldest of those defenders...
There has only ever been one.
The Verdant Warden.

Verdant Warden

“Where the roots remember, the Warden still walks.”

Deep within the forgotten reaches of the Elderwilds, where roots coil through ancient ruins and the canopy swallows the sky, there walks a spirit known only as the Verdant Warden.

Neither wholly beast nor god, the Warden is said to be born from the memory of the forest itself — a guardian shaped from bark, bone, and moss. Old stories claim that when sacred groves are threatened or ancient paths disturbed, the forest gathers its remnants together and breathes life into a new Warden. Ivy becomes sinew. Fungus becomes flesh. Fallen bone becomes its face.

The triquetra carved upon its brow is an ancient woodland sigil representing the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth. It marks the Warden not as a hunter, but as a keeper of balance — one who watches silently as empires rot and forests reclaim what was taken.

The Verdant Warden does not guard treasure. It guards remembrance.

Its shrine is woven from bark, fungus, bone, and vine — reclaimed fragments of the wilderness assembled into a sacred relic of the old world. Every piece unearthed rather than crafted, as though the forest itself shapes the artifact slowly over centuries beneath the shadow of the Hollowwind Mountains.
