Tales tell of a massive cat-like beast, silent as drifting fog and impossibly gravefull for its size. Its fur blacker than the moonless nights within the Gloamwood. Yet, within it's darkness, faint constellations shimmer like distant stars trapped beneath it's moonlit coat. Moving through the mire, its body seems to fade at the edges, as though part of it walks somewhere beyond this mortal realm.

The Veilseer is said to wander between the worlds unseen. Neither wholly beast nor spirit, but something in-between. Existing upon the thinning edge of the Veil — the hidden boundary separating the waking world from the older realms between it.

The crystal embedded within the Veilseer’s brow is believed to be far more than ornament. Folklore speaks of it as a living eye into the Veil itself, allowing the creature to perceive truths buried beneath memory, grief, and time. Yet the Veilseer does not keep this sight for itself alone.

Those touched by the Veilseer are believed to return changed. Some begin dreaming of unfamiliar stars hanging above endless forests. Others notice hidden trails where none existed before, or glimpse spectral figures watching from between the trees. Those touched by this beast are believed to become veil-touched — able to sense lingering spirits and perceive the faint currents flowing beneath the waking world

Though feared by many, the Veilseer is revered among mystics and the like as a sacred near hidden guide through the unseen. Offerings of crystal, soot-darkened mirrors, silver bells, and bowls of blackwater are still left in forgotten forest shrines for the creature, in hopes that it may one day be granted it's sight. Yet the old tales warn that the Veilseer does not open the Veil for those merely seeking it's power.
